West End Walkabout: 01
Low tide at Coal Harbour.
We took a walk along the seawall and into Stanley Park in early January, while there was real snow on the ground. It was a bit chilly, but a bright, sunny winter day.
This is some of the sandstone at the base of the seawall. It's covered at high tide, and exposed at low. The action of the waves, and the continual drying and rewetting, have created the colours and shapes.
The Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary is located just outside of Ladner, BC, in the wetlands of the Fraser River estuary. It's home to wide variety of birds, many of whom know a good thing when they see it and never leave.
(Their website has an excellent aerial photo of the sanctuary, if you want to get an overall sense of the layout.)
We visit Reifel several times a year, to feed the ducks and geese, entice chickadees into forgetting their status as "wild", and try to spot owls, hawks, eagles, and whatever else might be hanging around. I've put up two entries on walking through Reifel so far; these pictures are from the second visit, and I'd had my new camera for all of two days.
This is the pond that extends from the outer gate to the entry path.
Nola and I went for a walk in Lighthouse Park at the end of February. It was a semi-cloudy day, but under the trees, of course, not so bright.
